By Silver Firs · Montenegro trip planning, Žabljak
Yes—if you use only two bases and accept that the coast-to-mountain journey is a substantial travel day. This route gives two nights in Budva and two nights in Žabljak rather than attempting Durmitor as a rushed return trip from the coast.

Overnight bases
Budva
Best for the Budva Riviera, Boka Bay and access towards Lake Skadar.
Žabljak
Best for Durmitor National Park, Tara Canyon and northern activities.
Tivat or Podgorica
Use a late flight, or add an airport-area night when the flight is early.
Realistic driving times
These are planning ranges, not promises. Summer congestion, roadworks, mountain weather, local traffic and scenic stops can extend every journey.
| Journey | Planning range | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Tivat Airport → Budva | Approximately 35–60 minutes | Allow longer in summer traffic. |
| Budva → Kotor/Perast area | Approximately 45–75 minutes each way | Congestion can substantially extend the journey. |
| Budva → Virpazar | Approximately 45–60 minutes | Does not include the boat tour. |
| Virpazar → Žabljak | Approximately 3–4 hours | Allow 4–5 hours with lunch and scenic stops. |
| Žabljak → Podgorica Airport | Approximately 2.5–3 hours | Build in a flight-security margin. |
| Žabljak → Tivat Airport | Approximately 3–4 hours | A late flight is strongly preferable. |
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1Tivat arrival and BudvaCoast
- Private airport welcome and transfer to Budva.
- Check in and keep the first day light.
- Walk through Budva Old Town or continue towards Mogren Beach when the flight arrives early.
Alternative: For a late arrival, move the Old Town walk to the following evening.
Day 2Boka Bay, Perast and KotorBay
- Travel to the bay for a private Boka Bay boat tour.
- Visit Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks.
- Explore Kotor Old Town and add the cable car only when timing and weather allow.
- Return to Budva for the evening.
Alternative: Families may choose a shorter boat route; active guests can add a longer Blue Cave option.
Day 3Lake Skadar and journey northTransfer
- Check out and travel to Virpazar.
- Take a Lake Skadar boat tour.
- Add a Crmnica wine and local-food experience when it suits the group.
- Continue to Žabljak and check in for two nights.
Alternative: Skip the winery when travelling with a late start; protecting the daylight for the mountain transfer is more important.
Day 4Tara River and DurmitorNorth
- Choose Tara River rafting from Žabljak as the main adventure.
- Visit Đurđevića Tara Bridge and add the Tara Canyon zipline if operating.
- Use remaining time for Black Lake and a relaxed evening.
Alternative: Non-rafters can combine Black Lake with a Durmitor Jeep safari, guided horse riding in Žabljak or a guided scenic walk.
Day 5Departure from northern MontenegroDeparture
- Check out after breakfast.
- Transfer to Podgorica or Tivat Airport according to the confirmed flight.
- Include a short stop only if road conditions and check-in time leave a safe margin.
Alternative: For an early flight, add a fifth night near the departure airport and treat this as a six-day journey.
Is this route right for you?
First-time visitors with limited leave who still want the coast and northern mountains.
You want slow mornings, multiple adventure days or an early departure flight.
Add one night in Žabljak and use the seven-day itinerary for a more comfortable pace.
Silver Firs designs and coordinates the journey and remains your local planning contact. Individual activities are delivered by selected local operators, who manage their guides, equipment, safety procedures and on-the-day decisions. Final timings, inclusions and responsibilities are confirmed in writing.
Before you finalise the route
Keep outdoor days flexible. Confirm mountain access before a Durmitor excursion, agree a land-based alternative if a boat trip cannot run, and avoid a long mountain transfer immediately before an early flight. For families, confirm child ages, suitable safety equipment and activity restrictions with the operator before payment.

Frequently asked questions
Can Kotor and Durmitor fit into five days?
Yes, but only with a planned transfer north and two bases. A same-day return from the coast makes the northern section unnecessarily rushed.
Which airport works best?
Tivat is convenient for starting on the coast. Podgorica can be practical for the final transfer from Žabljak, depending on available flights.
Is rafting compulsory?
No. Weather, river conditions and participant suitability determine whether rafting operates. Jeep safari, horse riding and guided walking are alternatives.
Can Silver Firs arrange the complete route?
Yes. Silver Firs can coordinate private transport, accommodation assumptions and selected activities, subject to availability and written confirmation.
