By Silver Firs · Montenegro trip planning, Žabljak
For most first-time visitors, a balanced week uses three nights in Budva and three nights in Žabljak. Spend the coastal half on Boka Bay, Kotor and Lake Skadar, reserve Day 4 for travelling north, then use two full days for Tara Canyon and Durmitor.

Overnight bases
Budva
A convenient base for Budva Old Town, Boka Bay and Lake Skadar.
Žabljak
Three nights protect the northern programme from becoming a single rushed excursion.
Podgorica or Tivat
Choose around the flight schedule; early flights may require a final airport-area night.
Realistic driving times
These are planning ranges, not promises. Summer congestion, roadworks, mountain weather, local traffic and scenic stops can extend every journey.
| Journey | Planning range | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Tivat Airport → Budva | Approximately 35–60 minutes | Summer traffic can extend the transfer. |
| Budva → Boka Bay | Approximately 45–75 minutes each way | Final timing depends on departure pier and traffic. |
| Budva → Virpazar | Approximately 45–60 minutes | Allow additional time for Pavlova Strana. |
| Budva → Žabljak | Approximately 3–4 hours without long stops | Treat it as a 4–6 hour touring day. |
| Žabljak → Tara Bridge | Approximately 25–35 minutes | Weather can affect mountain roads. |
| Žabljak → Tivat/Podgorica Airport | Approximately 3–4 / 2.5–3 hours | Add a generous flight margin. |

Is this route right for you?
First-time visitors, couples, families and private groups wanting both coast and north.
Two bases reduce hotel changes while three northern nights absorb weather changes better.

Individual activities are delivered by selected local operators, who manage their guides, equipment, safety procedures and on-the-day decisions. Final timings, inclusions and responsibilities are confirmed in writing.
Before you finalise the route
Keep outdoor days flexible. Confirm mountain access before a Durmitor excursion, agree a land-based alternative if a boat trip cannot run, and avoid a long mountain transfer immediately before an early flight. For families, confirm child ages, suitable safety equipment and activity restrictions with the operator before payment.

Frequently asked questions
Are seven days enough for Montenegro?
Seven days are enough for a rewarding first visit when the route uses two bases. It is not enough to cover every region without rushing.
Where should I stay?
Use Budva, Kotor or Tivat for the coast and Žabljak for Durmitor and Tara Canyon. This route uses Budva and Žabljak.
Should I rent a car?
A rental car gives flexibility, but a private driver removes parking, navigation and mountain-road pressure. See the dedicated car-free itinerary.
What is the best season?
Late spring through early autumn gives the broadest outdoor choice, but individual activities depend on current weather, access and operator decisions.
Can the route start in Podgorica?
Yes. The sequence can be reversed or adjusted around Podgorica flights, accommodation and the group’s priorities.
