By Silver Firs · Montenegro trip planning, Žabljak
Use one coastal base and one northern base, and protect a full day for the transfer between them. Three nights around Boka Bay or Budva and three nights in Žabljak create enough time for both regions without repeatedly crossing the country.

Overnight bases
Tivat, Kotor or Budva
Select the base according to flight time and whether bay access or beaches matter more.
Žabljak
The practical base for Durmitor, Black Lake, Tara Bridge and northern activities.
Kolašin
Add two nights rather than squeezing Bjelasica into the transfer day.
Realistic driving times
These are planning ranges, not promises. Summer congestion, roadworks, mountain weather, local traffic and scenic stops can extend every journey.
| Journey | Planning range | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Tivat → Kotor/Perast | Approximately 20–45 / 30–60 minutes | Bay traffic can be slow. |
| Kotor → Budva | Approximately 35–60 minutes | Allow longer in peak summer. |
| Budva → Žabljak | Approximately 3–4 hours without stops | Plan 4–6 hours as a touring transfer. |
| Žabljak → Tara Bridge | Approximately 25–35 minutes | Easy to combine with northern activities. |
| Žabljak → Durmitor Ring | Variable full-day circuit | Seasonal road access must be checked. |
| Žabljak → Tivat/Podgorica | Approximately 3–4 / 2.5–3 hours | Early flights may require a final southern night. |
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1Tivat arrival and coastal baseArrival
- Airport meet and greet.
- Transfer to Tivat, Kotor or Budva according to the confirmed plan.
- Keep the evening free or add a short waterfront walk.
Alternative: Choose the base before booking flights and activities; moving hotels within the coast consumes useful time.
Day 2Boka Bay by private boatBay
- Take a private Boka Bay boat tour.
- Visit Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks.
- Explore Kotor Old Town.
- Add the cable car only when conditions and timing work.
Alternative: Choose the Blue Cave for a water-focused day or Perast for a gentler heritage day.
Day 3Budva RivieraCoast
- Walk Budva Old Town.
- Visit Sveti Stefan and selected Riviera viewpoints.
- Leave time for the beach or a relaxed lunch.
Alternative: Add Budva paragliding or Budva canyoning for an active coastal alternative.
Day 4Journey from coast to ŽabljakTransfer
- Check out and travel north.
- Stop for lunch and one meaningful scenic or cultural visit.
- Continue to Tara Bridge if daylight allows.
- Check in at Žabljak.
Alternative: Do not stack Lake Skadar, a winery and several northern stops into the same day; use the ten-day route if these are priorities.
Day 5Tara Canyon adventureCanyon
- Choose Tara River rafting from Žabljak.
- Visit Đurđevića Tara Bridge.
- Add the Tara Bridge zipline when operating.
- Return to Žabljak.
Alternative: Use a scenic canyon day when rafting is unsuitable or unavailable.
Day 6Durmitor National ParkMountains
- Visit Black Lake.
- Select a Durmitor Ring Jeep safari, ATV tour, horse-riding experience or guided hike.
- Finish with a traditional mountain meal.
Alternative: Match the day to the least experienced guest rather than choosing only by headline difficulty.
Day 7Departure or extensionDeparture
- Transfer to the confirmed airport.
- Use a late flight when leaving from Žabljak.
- Alternatively continue to Kolašin, Biogradska Gora or Podgorica for an extended journey.
Alternative: Add a final night south when the flight departs early.
Is this route right for you?
Stone towns, open water, canyon landscapes and high mountain scenery in one route.
Choose one coast base and do not underestimate the transfer north.
Keep one weather alternative for every rafting, paragliding or mountain day.
Silver Firs designs and coordinates the journey and remains your local planning contact. Individual activities are delivered by selected local operators, who manage their guides, equipment, safety procedures and on-the-day decisions. Final timings, inclusions and responsibilities are confirmed in writing.
Before you finalise the route
Keep outdoor days flexible. Confirm mountain access before a Durmitor excursion, agree a land-based alternative if a boat trip cannot run, and avoid a long mountain transfer immediately before an early flight. For families, confirm child ages, suitable safety equipment and activity restrictions with the operator before payment.

Frequently asked questions
Can Durmitor be visited as a day trip from Kotor or Budva?
It is possible but usually very long. Staying in Žabljak creates more useful time and reduces the effect of traffic and weather.
How many nights should I spend in Žabljak?
Two nights are the practical minimum; three nights are better when you want rafting plus a separate Durmitor activity.
Should Lake Skadar be included?
It can be added, but a focused coast-and-mountains week may feel better without another major detour. The general seven-day itinerary includes the lake.
Which coast base is best?
Tivat is convenient for the airport, Kotor for heritage and Budva for beaches and a wider evening choice.
Can Silver Firs tailor the activities?
Yes. Activities are selected around dates, group composition, conditions and operator availability.
